It got started under a different name in 2016 but was subsequently pulled from Apple’s app store due to the name being evocative of sentiments far from the company’s true desire. Much like a police scanner, Citizen uses radio antennae in major cities to pick up and scan emergency services radio communication.

Using these radio communications, Citizen App will alert you to issues occurring in your area. Whenever there is an incident, that location is noted and all users within a quarter mile of said incident will be pinged and informed of the situation.

Citizen comes with many features that help to ensure your safety, including a Covid-19 SafeTrace that can inform you if you have potentially been exposed to the virus. Additionally, there is also a feature that will let you know why a law enforcement helicopter is flying overhead, showing you the flight path intended as well as the reason, such as looking for an armed suspect, so you can stay clear of any dangerous areas.
