JD.com Brings Amazing Fishing Project in Northeast China to Millions of People
For uncounted centuries, the people of northeast China have headed out onto the frozen surface of Chagan Lake to drill holes in the ice, drop nets into the frigid water and pull out massive hauls of bighead carp using teams of horses.
During the Jin and Liao Dynasties (916 A.D. to 1234 A.D.), members of the royal family and their colorful entourages would make adventurous expeditions out onto Chagan (known to locals as White Holy Lake) for the annual fishing extravaganza. Now this ancient tradition is meeting modern technology as China’s largest retail firm, JD.com, has partnered with a local fishery to bring the delicacy of fresh bighead carp to millions of Jingdong customers. Interest in the fish of Chagan Lake exploded across China recently after a popular television documentary featured the history of the famous fishing expeditions of the Liao and Jin Dynasties. The challenge, however, was to find a way to process and deliver bighead carp to distant location while still fresh. This meant that the fish had to find its way to the dinner table of Chinese citizens within just hours of being pulled from the lake.
The problem was solved by JD’s unparalleled command of high technology, logistics and its cold supply chain. Jingdong formed a cooperative agreement with a company called Chagan Lake Fisheries. It was the first time this venerable fishing enterprise took on an e-commerce platform partner.
The process involved JD sending temperature-controlled transport vehicles to the lakeside where they were loaded up with freshly caught carp. Thanks to the JD.com”s super-efficient supply chain, the fish can be distributed to 300 cities across China in less than 24 hours.
Jie Wang is the key project leader for JD.com’s fresh food division. He said the partnership between Jingdong and Chagan Lake Fisheries “demonstrates the raw potential of a self-built logistics network.” He said not only does the project enable millions of Chinese people enjoy the rare treat of Chagan carp, but it has increased the profits of local fishing professionals and has elevated their brand profile.
Chagan Fishery director Yan Laisuo insisted on working only with JD.com on a project of this importance and magnitude.
