Andrew Lazarus Acquires The Beaches Hotel In Newcastle
Andrew Lazarus has finally acquired one of the most wildly popular venues in the area:
The Beach Hotel in Merewether.
Lazarus and his family were eyeing the Newcastle Herald pub for a long time, and it finally came to fruition.
Also commonly known as “The Beaches”, the beautiful and well-known hotel is a major Newcastle Trophy Asset.
The enormous 1,858 square meter estate features verandas overlooking one of the area’s most beloved beaches, the Merewether Surf Beach, which also just so happens to be mere minutes away from the heart of the Newcastle CBD.
The immovable brick building has been a staple, a cornerstone, and an icon of Newcastle and its community since it was built in 1946.
While on the market, the estate’s price range had reached the heights of over twenty million dollars: a small price to pay for the well-known Lazarus family.
The Lazarus family has owned and operated many popular hotels over the last thirty years, such as Eastern in Bondi Junction, Shoal Bay Country Club, The Exchange Hotel, Hamilton, The Vauxhall Inn, Granville, and the El Toro Hotel & Motor Inn, Warwick Farm.
While the Andrew Lazarus family spent $6.5 million on renovations for the Shoal Bay Country Club (large thanks to Peter Lazarus), there are no immediate plans to renovate The Beach Hotel in Merewether.
After shortly considering refurbishment, the Lazarus family decided to engage with the community and architects before taking any action.
John Twohill, the man that ran the establishment for thirty years, had mixed feelings about the sale of the estate but Peter Lazarus will soon be taking over the day-to-day operations of the company.
