Georgette Mulheir: Defend Haiti´s Democracy to Save Children

Haiti is undergoing its trying period in history as the political and humanitarian crisis escalates to boiling levels. But, unfortunately, the entire world seems not bothered by the dire situation of the Central American country. Fortunately, several humanitarian organizations give the whole situation the necessary attention it deserves, led by Georgette Mulheir through an organization she founded that advocates for human rights globally (Ted).

In collaboration with other partners, Georgette Mulheir came up with Defend Haiti’s Democracy. They are gathering global experts in governance and human rights to advance lasting solutions as they try to salvage the escalating situation before it gets out of hand. For the past two years running, the political situation in Haiti is getting worse, and recently the crisis has seriously intensified. The whole case gets brought about by a clear violation of the Haiti constitution by a political class led by the current Haiti authoritarian president, who has blatantly refused to vacate power and extended his term in office.

According to Georgette Mulheir, the Authoritarian regime with a firm grip on the country’s power uses and employs crude methods and tactics to oppress any opposition against the president. Their practices of oppression constitute violation of human rights. Currently, Georgette Mulheir explains, Haiti has no functioning government as there is no parliament of a locally elected government. The presidential term limit in Haiti is under trial here as the Haitian and international legal experts advise the president to vacate office. Still, he instead chooses to extend his term limit, creating a constitutional crisis escalating to a political and humanitarian crisis.

A report was released by Harvard Law school on international Human rights in conjunction with the Haitian Human rights observatory. It demonstrated how the current Haiti regime is blatantly violating human rights through widespread massacres, murders, rapes and kidnappings that bare all state-sanctioned targets to opponents of the current authoritarian regime. The various legal experts contacted by Georgette Mulheir have stated that the crimes committed by this government constitute crimes against humanity. Therefore, there will be severe ramifications and consequences to the perpetrators of these acts. These experts are planning to present their evidence in an online conference addressing the Haitian situation to come up with a lasting solution for this country now and in the future.
