Sujit Choudhry and the Security Sector
Sujit Choudhry was born in Delhi, India but his parents later moved to Toronto, where Choudhry was raised. He has stated on multiple occasions that his Indian immigrant parents were quite intent on having a home that encouraged insightful communication about the world events happening in the world. His parents were very scholarly in their approach and frequently has channels like the CBC on in the house for everyone in the home to hear throughout the day and discuss together later.
Both of Choudhry’s parents worked in fields where their main goals were to learn how to help people in different ways. His father worked at the University of Toronto as an economics professor, while his mother working in the medical field as a registered nurse.
By the 1990’s, Sujit Choudhry had garnered the influence he needed from his home to begin expressing his political ideas and scholarly thoughts through his writing. His focus was on ethnically divided societies and how to best create constitutional laws that would bring about more cohesiveness. In 2008 he released his first major work of comparative constitutional literature called the “Constitutional Design for Divided Societies: Integration or Accommodation?”. Choudhry worked with political scientists as well as legal scholars to edit his work that was published in the Oxford University Press.
His current work in security services leads into his mission to promoting democratization in countries that are experiencing difficulty in this area. Post-authoritarian environments have the added difficulty towards a stable democratization as their police forces and intelligence agencies are often compromised.
This is the work that Sujit Choudhry is focused and will continue to unfold for many years to come. His new book “Security Center Reform in Constitutional Transitions” provides a deep look and a spotlight on how to best approach environments currently undergoing these issues today.
