Teach To One: Math Partnering with Schools Across USA to Improve Student Success Rates

Teach To One is a countywide flagship program of New Classrooms Innovation Partners, a not-for-profit organization founded by Joel Rose, Chris Rush and members of the School of One project. Teach To One aims to help students succeed by providing innovative and personalized learning techniques and develop skills for success in all areas of life. One way that the program does this is by partnering with schools across the USA.

The Teach To One program is implemented in three public schools in Tulsa: McLain Junior and High School, Hale Junior High and Webster Middle School. The benefits of the program are evident by the students at McLain registering among the best rates of growth in math in the district. For Hale Junior High, adopting the program has seen all the math teachers return, reducing the turnover rate and students’ academic gains improve in a year.

Another partner of the Teach To One program is Mesa Alta Junior High School. Through the program, proficiency of the 8th Grade students has doubled from 4% to 9%. In addition, improvements for the Algebra 1 students has gone up threefold in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) in a year.

In Ector County, middle schools partnering with Teach To One is particularly important because of the unique challenges to education associated with the oil industry in the region. Therefore, the program is an indispensable tool for students with learning gaps that are characteristic of families working in the oil business. In addition, the program makes learning more enjoyable to students keeping them from leaving school to work for oil companies.

Other partners of the program are military schools like LEARN 6 and LEARN 10 based in Chicago. The program is particularly important as it personalizes learning to suit the needs of students who may be at different levels, due to relocation associated with military workers.

For Phoenix International Academy, which teaches students between 4th Grade and 8th Grade, there have been benefits for their teachers and students. The teachers fully support the program as it is effective whereas students are more confident in math. Students at the school have also developed an increased interest and enjoy learning math.
