The Journey of Steph Korey Toward Starting Her Company
Social entrepreneurship is more than just donating money. According to Away’s co-founder Steph Korey, businesses should not have to wait till they can write a check, to be social entrepreneurs, they can simply offer their services. Some large corporations focus on public stunts of donations that have greatly distorted the positive impact that social entrepreneurship has on communities. Companies like Away are making a significant difference by doing the actual work. They have done this by partnering with Peace Direct and offering their services as a means of contributing to the communities.

Steph Korey’s Journey toward Starting Away
Away is a brand whose focus is on improving the travel experience by creating products that enhance travel culture. Born to culturally diverse parents, Steph Korey was privileged to have a taste of integrating both cultures. This enabled her to build a brand that inspired its users to travel more often.
How Employment brought about Away
Steph Korey’s employment at Warby Parker and Casper’s supply chain built the mechanisms needed to start Away. Her job description was mainly focused on the product development, supply, and logistics fields. Through that, she saw the correlation of how cutting off the middleman in the supply chain of a product reduced the overall price of the product. The opportunity to start was availed when Away’s cofounder, Jen, could not find a suitcase for travel that was cheaper than the cost of the trip. Steph Korey also learned through her employment experience that a brand is built and marketed on developing a story that its consumers can relate to.
Away’s participation in Social Entrepreneurship
Away’s founders believed in building the company to serve the community as one of the motivations towards its start. They, therefore, partnered with Peace Direct before actualizing the brand’s goals and objectives. Away provided Peace Direct with the expertise that would be needed to help in the increase of peacebuilding as a means of conflict resolution.
