The Music Will Continue to Play at Repton School
On June 10th, it was announced on the official Repton School site that Covid-19 was not going to prevent the school’s musicians from practicing and performing entirely. Repton is a Co-Ed Independent School for students aged 13 to 18, and it provides a unique and well-rounded education. Their music department, in particular, is a distinguished aspect of the school, with teachers that share their expertise to help make talented, dynamic musicians. More from ukboardingschool.com
It is no surprise that there was speculation that the pandemic would negatively impact the music program’s schedule for the foreseeable future. However, due to today’s technologically-advanced society, lessons/group meetings have been able to continue on online platforms, despite being on lockdown. They’ve even been able to maintain the live component of musical performances, in a sense. During the summer term, there have been virtual chapel services on Wednesdays. The instructors and students have had to get creative with ways to preserve the authenticity and joy of music by doing fun “challenges,” where they all record themselves singing at home with a back track and then share the mixed versions with their classmates.
Another way the Repton School’s music department has kept the music alive is by having a competition for “young musician of the year.” It is a highlight because the students get to show off their hard work and talent. This year the demonstration for the young musicians was different because they decided to use this unique time to celebrate their magnificent young talent, as opposed to making it all about battling it out. They also had a remote “B Block Concert” with all of the school’s awarded musicians, along with other musical performances that they recorded and shared online. Plus, a concert band video with over 40 students and a full summer concert is in the works.
The music department and its students are known for giving engaging and high-quality performances. The way the lockdown was handled proved that beautiful music can still be created, no matter the circumstances. The success of this program only adds to the positive reputation of Repton as a whole.
